On June 17, 2010, Alexis Elizabeth Boyle was born. My older sister, Erin, brought her beautiful daughter into the world. I was lucky enough to be there. My sister is amazing. She was amazing that day and I am so thrilled that she finally got her baby girl.

I went to my 10 year high school reunion in June. I had such a blast. It was so fun to catch up with old friends and see where everyone is at in their lives. We had a family bbq in the park on Friday night and then on Saturday night there was an adults only dinner at the Basque Center downtown. It reminded me why I loved being a Boise Brave!

My baby turned 2 on June 26, 2010! We had an airplane party in our backyard. "Panes and copters" are Chases favorite things right now. He is such a fun, sweet boy. He talks more and more everyday. Yesterday, he counted to 10. He loves to run and especially jump. He makes me happy and I am so thankful everyday that he is a part of our family.

May brought us John competing in and finishing his first marathon! It was his goal for this year and he did it! We were so proud of him.

Then a little later in the month, my brother, Drew, and his wife Jenny had their son Fisher Allen. I was able to go up the night he was born. Talk about a gorgeous child.

Brennan and I went on a buying trip/girl's weekend in LA. We basically ate and shopped for 72 hours. Pure bliss.

We finished up the month with a week family vacation in Southern California. We spent several days at Grammie and Poppa's just playing. Then for Memorial Day weekend we headed out to the Embassey Suites Resort in Oxnard, CA with Karen, Cecil, Jen and Kyle. It was beyond wonderful. The resort was gorgeous. We swam, played lawn games, rode bikes, and rode in Poppa's boat. I would go back anytime.

APRIL

April brought Bella's first time on a soccer team. John was the coach. There were about 8 little kids from our neighborhood on the team. Bella was literally "that kid." You know the one. The one who cries, refuses to play and then when they are "playing" they are really just sitting in the grass picking flowers. As my dad would say, "She is her own kind of wonderful."

In one of her final games, I final bribed her into going into the game and trying to kick the ball. She actually did it! She ran out there, went after the ball, went to kick it and was promptly pushed down by another player. She started to cry. I felt so bad. I am not sure she will every play soccer again...

March brought Easter. We spent Easter in Boise with cousins. When we got back home, I tried to get fun pictures of my kids in their Easter outfits...the above picture is the best that came out of it. So sad. Bella, unfortunately, is going through a stage where she basically refuses to look at the camera or smile. Plus, the wind was blowing...didnt make for the best pictures.

Sisters

Today is my sister, Erin's, birthday. And I have been thinking all day about how thankful and lucky I am to have such amazing women in my life. I adore all my sisters. I have 9 all together, if you include the 7 gorgeous gals that are my in-laws. I feel like I could go to any one with a problem and get help or we could go out and have a great time. They are truly some of the best, most kind and funnest people I know.

I am especially thankful for Erin and Brennan. (And my mom, because we always say it is just like she is a sister) They are the best friends I have in this world and no one understands me like they do. I love that we can be on a girl's trip having a blast or sitting on a couch in mom's living room and it doesn't matter. We genuinely love to be around each other, take care of each other, love each other.

So, Happy Birthday Erin! I love you....and let's go shopping soon.

Bella's Valentine's Day Party

Yesterday, Bella had a Valentine's Day party for the little girls in our neighborhood. Bella was so excited all week, every morning she would wake up and ask if it was the day of her party. The cute part was that almost every parent who dropped off their little girl said the same thing, they all couldn't wait to have a party. Nine girls and a little brother. It was a great time. We made necklaces and rings. We had a lunch of heart shaped pizza, vegi's with purple ranch and strawberries. We played games and decorated sugar cookies.

On February 3, 2010, my baby sister, Brennan had her first baby, Dane Robert Lau. He was almost 5 weeks early weighing in at 5lbs 12oz. Erin and I were lucky enough to be able to jump in the car here in SLC and get to Boise in time to be in the room as Dane was born. It was such a blessing in my life to get to be there for my best friend.

Brennan was "All Eternity," as my dad would have said. This picture pretty much sums up the pushing. She pushed for a long hard time...amazing.

Dane struggled for the first couple of hours to get his breathing in check. He was pretty quickly swept up and taken to the NICU, but he was only there for 3 hours before coming to be with his mama.

Brennan got to give him a kiss before he was taken to the NICU.

All clean and healthy.

Las Vegas with Kids

John and Brad had to be in Las Vages for a week in January. Since John was gone all but 5 days for the entire month, Erin and I decided to pack up the kids and go spend some days with the dads. Las Vegass isn't known to be the most kid-friendly city in the world, but we found lots of fun things to do.

We spent an entire afternoon at Circus Circus playing arcade games and eating the most enormous hot dogs I have ever seen.

M&M world was a highlight. The kids each got to choose a candy. Chase got mini M&M's and Bella decided on pink and purple M&M's.

We stayed at Treasure Island. We checked out the cool pirate ships out front.

Erin and I even found an evening to go down and play some nickel slots. We are big spenders. We had a blast, enjoying our free virgin strawberry daiquiri's.

My Christmas Present

I just had to share the amazing Christmas gift John gave me. This is a picture done by Liz Lemon Swindle entitled, "The Worth of a Soul." I love it so much. He waited until we were all done opening presents and then brought it out. It made me cry. It was such a thoughtful and beautiful gift. The story behind this painting is amazing too, I have included the artist's version of the story below.

"When Mothers Without Borders approached me about going to Africa, I told them I was not interested. For me Africa was a world away, “and besides,” I thought, “I am too busy.” Imagine my surprise when I found myself on a plane to Zambia in June 2007.

One of the first children I met was Kennedy, the little boy you see in the painting. At three years old he has lost both of his parents to AIDS and was found living alone with his six year old brother and ten year old sister. When I thought of those three children struggling to survive and the millions of others across Africa in similar circumstances, I felt an overwhelming hopelessness and said to myself, “No amount of money can fix this.”

Later that day while we were filming, Kennedy jumped into the arms of the man portraying the Savior. As I stood watching them, Kennedy turned towards me and our eyes met. At that moment I knew it wasn’t hopeless. I realized that the Savior can fix not only the problems of Africa, but of the whole world…and we can be His hands to do it.

Looking back I realize that my reasons for not wanting to go to Africa are likely the same as yours. We are busy and feel like we cannot make a difference, but I know now that neither is true. Christmas morning was wonderful. Bella was so excited to get her 5 babies that she very specifically asked for. Chase got his very own chair and a play cell phone in his stocking. He got other gifts too, but those were the big hits of the day.

I am so thankful for my kids and it makes me so happy to see them experiencing and making these wonderful childhood memories.

'Twas The Night Before Christmas

This evening when Bella was disobeying, John said to her, "Do you want me to call Santa and tell him that you are being naughty?" This made her stop her "naughty" behavior almost immediately. A few minutes later, John did something that Bella did not like. She proceeded to head into her bedroom, get her toy cell phone and make the following call:

Bella: "Hi Santa. Daddy is being naughty. Put him on the naughty list, OK? Bye-Bye Santa."

Bella's First Dance Recital

Bella has been in dance this fall and yesterday was her first recital. I was so proud of her. She did really good. They did two dances. One, to Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree and the second, to Under the Sea from the Little Mermaid. Bella, especially loved the second because she loves all things Disney Princess. My favorite part was her costume. How cute is the miniature coconut bra?

Bella's First Primary Program

Two weeks ago, Bella was in her first Primary Program. She was so happy that Grammie Karen got to be there. She did so good. She didn't have to be promoted or anything and she repeated her part, "I am thankful for my daddy because he plays with me." We are so proud of you, Bells!

On Halloween, our friends, the Allreds and the Foulgers, came over for dinner. And then we went tricker treating. Chicken and Jas (what I affectionately called Chase and Bells on Halloween) loved having their friends, Hayden, Tate, Addison, Lucas, Reese and Avery over.

Chase and I went to about five houses tricker treating, while John and Bella went to a lot more! In fact, Bella had to come home, dump her bucket, and went back out. She refused to let John help her. So, most of the time she was dragging it behind her. John said that in between every house Bella would turn to him and say, "Dad, I love you! Dad, I love HALLOWEEN!"

FHE- Pumpkin Style

The Monday before Halloween we carved our pumpkins for Family Home Evening. Bella wanted a "real scary" one. So, she and daddy had spooky pumpkins and Chase and I had happy pumpkins. Bella dictated the emotion of everyone's pumpkins. We had a lot of fun and we especially enjoyed munching on the pumpkin seeds we roasted from our pumpkins.

A few weeks ago, I had to drive to Idaho and work for the weekend. The kids had a blast at Aunt Erin's on Friday, going to a Halloween party. Then on Saturday, daddy took them to the pumpkin patch. John said that Bella just kept bringing more and more pumpkins over. Our little family of four, ended up coming home with about 10 pumpkins. Way to go little girl!

Witches Night Out

Every year my sister, Erin, and I got to Gardner Village for Witches Night Out. It is food, shopping, and lots o' witches. We always have the best time. This year we went, with lots of friends, to Buca Di Beppo for dinner and then headed over and went shopping. It is one of my favorite nights of the year.

The first weekend of October, we headed down to John's parent's house to be with Karen on her birthday. Julie and I drove down with all 5 kids by ourselves, and John flew in the next day. On Friday, we went to Oak Glen, this fun apple-picking community. It was a perfect fall day. Then, on Saturday, we went to the beach. Perfect. Fall and Summer all in one. It is always nice to skip town and head down and be with family.

When it comes to music, John and I could not have more different taste. I am country. My feelings for Kenny Chesney are clear. I love Taylor Swift and would do almost anything to see George Strait at the Grand Ole Opry. John, on the other hand, loves British (insert whiny) rock. Radiohead. Muse. You get the picture. The ONLY band we can agree on is The Killers. So, they came to SLC in September and we went together. Brandon Flowers is a great performer and definitely has some flare towards the dramatic. It was a fun night. I am thankful for fun date nights with my hudband.

John and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary with a great trip to Austin, Texas. John and Brad had to go for work and Erin and I were lucky enough to tag along. It was the most relaxing, beautiful trip. A HUGE shout out to Julie for watching our babes.

This is the rotunda of the Texas State Capitol. We went there on our last day before heading to the airport. It was a gorgeous building and we learned some super fascinating facts about the Lone Star State. IE- There state legislature only meets once every other year. Ok, maybe that is only interesting to me.

Brennan and I went and saw Kenny Chesney in July. It was such a fun night. He played with Lady Antebellum and Miranda Lambert. He really does put on the best show. It doesn't look like it from the pictures, but we had good seats. We were on the first row above the floor. It was so hot though, as you can tell from the last picture....shine city! Love Kenny. California Adventure- Dinsey Day 2

We spent our second day at Disneyland at California Adventure. It was a fun, shorter day. We loved the Tower of Terror and the Roller Coaster. However, due to an unpredictable work situation, we had to leave early and we actually drove all the way home to Utah that night. Spending time with John's parents in Southern California was a wonderful way to enjoy our summer vacation this year. Bella asks almost everyday when she gets to see "Papa and Bunny" again.

DISNEYLAND!

Is there any way to better celebrate a 4th Birthday than by going to Disneyland? For Bella it was heaven. Not only did she get to meet, Minnie, Jasmine, Snow White and Ariel, but for her birthday present she got to go to the Bibbity Bobbity Boutique. This was an amazing experience that I recommend to anyone with a princess-loving little girl. A "fairy godmother in training" did her hair, makeup and nails. She got a special "birthday princess" sash and she got to keep her nail polish, makeup, and face stickers. You could just tell Bella felt so pretty and special. It was a perfect way to begin her birthday at Disneyland!

For family vacation this August, we went with Brennan and Brad to Southern California. After working for a couple of days, the first full "fun day" we went to Laguna Beach. Uncle Brad and Bella were both made into mermaids, Chase ate sand and Bren and I got some excellent sun. It was a good way to begin our vacation!

Monday Night is Family Night.

Tonight we went to the splash pad in Herriman for Family Home Evening. Bella and Chase didn't really play in the water as much as on the play equipment, but they had fun. Chase is so brave. He climbed up multiple things by himself. Then he tried to go down the big slides all by himself. I think I am in for some trouble!

So, my wise husband talks his smart brother into riding from Yuba to Scipio on their bikes in 100 degree heat. We were going to go get ice cream. Well, John made it the entire way, only almost puking twice and Joe rode a nice part of the way on the side of Jake's car. Classic.

We enjoyed a nice summer vacation this last weekend. We went with most of the Browns to lake Yuba. I love Yuba. It isn't a mountain lake, so the water is warm. There are sandy beaches, showers and flushing toliets.

It was so nice to spend time with loved ones. I love that Bella got to hang out with all her cousins, especially most of her girl cousins who live in Idaho. I loved that we got to build relationships and create memories. I love the fact that we all love being together. I look forward to these trips every time they come around. I am thankful to have joined a family who loves one another and has such a blast every time we get together.

Last Monday night, we went up to Strawberry Reservoir to go fishing on Papa's boat. It was nice to be on the water, enjoying the fresh air, scenery and family. It was surprising that Josh caught a fish, because all the kiddos were so loud and stomping around they must have scared away most of the fish. But it was a great way to spend a summer evening.

Last Friday was Chase's birthday. In true first birthday style, we threw a bash. This is how Chases felt about his birthday, very excited.

We decided to make gourmet burgers for dinner. John had the idea to have everyone fill out an order form and then he, Brad and Matt assembled them. The burgers were excellent! They had the works. Grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, bacon, guacamole. Divine. They were hilarious. When an order was ready, they would yell like, "Courtney Order Up!" Then they put out a tip jar.

Dear Chase

Happy Birthday Bubba! It was one year ago that you were born and came to our family. June 26, 2008 is ranked as one of the best days of my life. Only in competition with the day I married your dad, the day your sister was born and the days both of you were sealed to us in the Temple. I prayed for you to come to us for a long time. I swear that I could almost feel your spirit urging me to find you. I knew you were coming to us and I just had to find the way.

I am eternally grateful to your birth parents. They are wonderful people who love you and want all the best for you in this life. That is what they thought your dad and I could provide for you. I have tried to do this in the last year. I will continue to try to give you the best in the years to come.

Thank you for the joy you have brought into our family. You are loved by everyone you meet. You have a great smile and an infectious laugh. You love to explore the world around you and have since you were 6 months old. You love to eat and only get upset when you dont get your food quick enough. You are as good tempered as any baby I have ever seen. People comment on that, too. I feel so lucky to call you mine, your dad would add, "ours."

I call you my "four-pound hero" sometimes. Because you were so small and such a fighter from day one. The doctor told me, "We are trying to think of a reason to keep him here in the hospital, but he is doing so good." I pray that you will continue to fight. Fight for your family. Date Night Saturday Night

Last night, John and I went on a date night with Brad, Brennan, Drew, Jenny, Brad and Erin. We went to dinner and then headed over to Lagoon. We were hoping to get on some rides while the rain subsided. We did. There were hardly any lines and we rode Wicked 3 Times! It was a lot of fun. At the very end of the night, Bren, Brad, John and I were the very last people on the Tidal Wave. They sat on one end and we sat on the other. We then proceeded to yell every silly thing we could think of when each of us was up in the air. I believe, boobs, that's what she said, and mooing were all used. Needless to say, it was a great night!

They got to go on a "Princess Adventure" and meet several Prince and Princesses. Unfortunately, it was pouring so they didn't get to do the outside activities, nail painting, updos, and crown making. We still had a great time though.

Oquirrh Mountain Temple

We have the unique opportunity to have a Temple opening in our area. It is really exciting. Since it is opening up in our neck of the woods, we get to volunteer and be apart of the open house. John helped prepare things prior to the open house, setting up barricades and chairs in the tents.

I was able to go and be an usher last Tuesday night. I was stationed at the front door, counting each person coming through the door. In the two plus hours I was out front, over 600 people came through my door. By the way, I was on the slow door. I bet the other door had double that. It was a great experience. I was able to take one of the Young Women I work with at church with me. After our shift was over, we walked through the Temple. There was a wonderful spirit there. And my sweet Young Woman said, "I just can't stop smiling."

Then on Friday night, John, Brennan, the kids, and I got to go to the open house as visitors. The Temple is just beautiful. The craftsmanship is impeccable. The Spirit is divine. I am excited and blessed to be apart of all of this.

After our Erickson Family Lagoon weekend, my fabulous sister-in-law, Janet, stayed in town and helped me get my yard into shape. We have lived in our home for almost four years and we have, basically, only gotten grass down. So, since everything I plant dies, Janet came in and worked her magic. The yard looks AMAZING. I could never have done it without her. I love it!

On the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend my family had a little reunion at Lagoon. It was such a fun day! Bella loves her cousins and to be at Lagoon with them was like a dream come true. Bella loved the bumper cars, the train and the merry go round. She did not, however, like rattle snake rapids that much. She kept saying, "I no like the boats. I get too wet." She said it all day long. It was funny. Chase also got to go on his first ride. The Merry Go Round. I am not sure how well he liked it....he didn't cry though. I always have a wonderful time with my family. It was a great weekend. Thank you mom for making it happen!

15 Months and counting

Since this is only my second post on what is the johnandcourtney blog (should be Courtney and her kids blog, which I don't mind, really), I feel like I have to explain myself a little. I'm going to try my best not to make this anything more than what I'm trying to make it, a point of no return, commitment, a letter to myself laying out my plan. I figure if I tell enough people then I have to do it, if I don't then everyone will know.

As I am just 15 months away from turning 30 and I have been kind of freaking out. I have some complex with being young. So I have been thinking a lot about what I can do to keep myself as young as possible. Since I'm not going to doing anything irresponsible like quite my job and go travel Europe with my family for a year I have another plan: To be the fittest I have ever been in my life by the age of 30.

So I have set some goals that I think will help me get to that goal. In 2 months I am having my 29th birthday so I am going to ride a 29 mile mountain bike trail called Wasatch Crest. Before my 30th Birthday I am going to run a marathon, and in addition to that I am going to run 30 miles (haven't decided if that's going to be part of my first marathon +4 miles or a separate run).

So I have a busy 15 months ahead of me but I am excited about it. If anyone wants to join in please let me know as I am game.

After the 1st quarter, they always invite the kids out onto the court to dance. This is Bella's favorite part of the game. She even has her favorite dancer that always takes her out.

We are season ticket holders to the Utah Flash. It is the NBA D-league team here in Utah. We always have a great time at the games. Above are some pictures from this season. The Flash did AWESOME this year. They made it to the championship series. It was so fun to watch.

We took my mom to the airport yesterday. It was difficult to say goodbye. I think it will take awhile to get use to not being able to pick up the phone and call her at anytime. I am thankful to live in an age of blogs, internet and email though. I think that will make the distance shorter.

We just received an email from her saying she landed and has made it to Suva. After landing in Nadi, she had a five hour bus drive. I can't even imagine how tired she must be. She did mention that the scenery is gorgeous. I can't wait to see it for myself.

We had a wonderful weekend leading up to my mom leaving on her mission this morning. On Saturday night, we went to the Mayan for dinner. The kids LOVED it. Tyler will tell you that he got to "push the guy into the water." Bella and Carly ran, played and ate till their little tummies were full. Then the girls went to the new Forever 21 at South Towne Mall. It was AMAZING. I love that store. It was so fun to go with mom too. It is our little tradition.

Then on Sunday we went to my Aunt Chris and Uncle John's home for an open house for my mom. There were so many family members there. It was wonderful. We took lots of pictures and gave lots of hugs. We are so excited for our mom, the missionary.

This morning we dropped my mom off at the MTC. I have to admit, I think up until then I was in denial as to what was about to happen. I shed some tears. I know I will shed more on Saturday when she gets on her plane. It helped that after being in the MTC for a couple of hours she called and said that she would be done at 4pm and could leave. So, I asked if I could come and take her to dinner. I did. It was great.

I am going to miss her terribly. She is the person I call whenever I need help or advice. She is always there to comfort and serve. Plus, I genuinely love being with her. She is one of my very best friends. I am proud of the sacrifice she is making to spread the Gospel, but man, I will be counting the days until she comes home!

We had the great opportunity to have Chase's birth parents come for a visit this past weekend. They flew in from Indiana and we spent Saturday together at Jungle Jim's in Murray. Then we had a nice dinner on Sunday. Their love for Chase is so evident. We will forever be grateful for the amazing gift they gave us.

Bella's First Sleepover

Last Friday, I got a call from my nephew, Thomas. He said, "I want to come and stay at your house for 6 days." We settled for one night. He then called John to negotiate when he could go to his office and get a ride to our house. John said, "Four." Thomas said, "No, that's too late, 2:00," after much negotiation they settled on 3:30.

After a pizza dinner we went to a jump house place near our house. Bella and Thomas had a wonderful time. They wore themselves out. When we got back home, we settled into PJ's and sleeping bags, put on Toy Story 2 and they drifted to sleep. It was a perfect first sleepover.

Southern California Trip

We decided to get out of the snow and cold and go visit Grammie and Papa in California a couple of weekends ago. It was so fun just to be outside. Chase loved the dogs and his first time in an outside swing.

We stayed Friday night in San Diego. Jenny and Kyle came too. It was a nice relaxing night. We ate in downtown SD and went in the hot tub. Then we all slept really well, including the kids.

On Saturday, we went to the Wild Animal Park.

Needless to say, I did not go into the Aviary.

On the way home we stayed in St. George. Chase had his first experience in a pool. It was a little cold for his and my liking.

We had a great time. It was a perfect break from the cold winter. And a fun time with the people I love most.

Another January....Another Birthday

I turned 27 last week. John had to go to Vegas for work, so the kids and I drove up to spend the week with my mom. My birthday was really low key and nice. My family came over to my brother's for my birthday dinner. It was, as always, delicious.

Then, the next day my mom took me shopping for my birthday. Sometimes people complain about being born in January, because it is so close to Christmas, but I love it. Mostly because I always get shopping money and I always get great deals on the after the Holidays sales. Target had rack after rack of 50 to 75% of clothes. I scored.

Now, if I hadn't come down with strep and the flu the next day, it would have been the perfect week in Boise. Sadly, I had to miss dinner with my girlfriends because of being sick. LAME.

Even though John was gone for my birthday, he gets major points for my gift this year, again it includes shopping...

The Saturday before he left and before my birthday he told me to get a babysitter and nothing else. Well, 1 hour before the sitter was set to arrive, he handed me an envelope. The inside read as follows:

Birthday Shopping Bonanza

You have two hours to spend your allotted birthday money. You may chose wherever you want to go and any money leftover will be forfeited. Following shopping you must wear 1 piece you purchased to dinner.

It was SO fun. Shopping with no kids. Just for me. With a specific amount of money to spend. Fabulous. Seriously, my favorite thing to do. I hit up Forever 21 for the trendies and then went to BR and the Buckle for the necessities. They best part of this trip too was that EVERYTHING was on sale. My kind of birthday.

My beautiful mother got her mission call today. She will be spending the next 18 months in the South Pacific, that's right, FIJI! We are so thrilled for her. She reports to the MTC in Provo in the middle of March. I am going to miss her terribly, but I know she will do an amazing job. Also, this means we are going to Fiji. How cool is that?

OUR BIG DAY!

On Saturday, January 3, 2009, we sealed Chase to us in the Salt Lake Temple. It was a beautiful day. We arrived at the temple and the kids got to go into the children's room while we were treated just like a bride and groom again. They gave us special attendants and I got to primp in the bride's room. We actually were sealed in one of the original pioneer sealing rooms. It was right next to the front doors of the temple and to get there we were able to go through some beautiful older areas of the temple that we would other wise not been able to see. It was so amazing, for so many reasons.

When they finally brought the kids in, Bella pretty much ran to my arms saying, "Mama! Mama! Mama!" She gave me a huge hug and then sat on Grandma's lap. Chase was his happy easy going self the entire time. Completely content just to stare at the chandelier. We felt so blessed to be able to be with them in such a holy place.

After the ceremony we took the above pictures. I thought they turned out pretty well, especially considering it was January in Utah. Then we headed over to a chapel in the avenues for a luncheon. It was simple and wonderful to be with all the people we love so much.

The next day John blessed Chase in our ward. John did such a nice job. I cried through the entire thing. I know I say this over and over, but I am so thankful for my kids. They are my miracles and I would not change who they are or what it took to get them for anything.

Chase continues to be my chill, happy little boy. He is sitting up, grabbing everything in sight, and even "inch worming" it across the floor. It is not exactly crawling, it is more like going all the way up on his toes and then down on to his tummy. He does it well though. He is moving all over. He even waved at John today. He is my sweetheart.

New Year's Vacation

We spent New Year's with my family up Ogden canyon at a cabin my mom had rented for the occasion. We had such a blast! We did Christmas while we were up there. My mom made all of the grandkids sock monkeys dressed to their specific interests. (My dad loved sock monkeys. It was a tribure to him.) Chase's was a "First Blood Monkey" and Bella's was a "Fashionista." They were fabulous.

My mom also made all the girls Tutus and head pieces. Bella did not take hers off. She even slept in it. I thought the picture below was so cute- tired girls at breakfast with one Thomas in the middle.

One afternoon we went sledding. We even convinced Grandma to go down the hill. She is such a good sport. Bella did not like to sled. She opted to build a "no-nan" instead. Everything in my family turns into a competition, even sledding. Janet beat John in the final heat down the hill, as one might guess, John was not happy about it. Let's just say he likes to win.

Sledding was not the only competition we had while up there. Others included an appetizer and dessert "throwdown." Which John won the appetizer portion. A kereoke contest, Brennan beat out Emily to win, and a nice snowball fight too. Thanks for great memories mom!

It's Official!!

On Monday, December 29th, 2008, we finalized our adoption of Chase. It was a great day! We went to court with our attorney and social worker and then we were taken back into the judges chambers and we were asked several formal questions and then the judge signed a paper and it was done. This was the beginning of a wonderful week, finishing with Chase's sealing and blessing.

Tonight we went out to dinner. The waitress kindly asked me what I wanted to drink and I replied, my usual, "Diet Coke." She then turned to my 3 year old and ask her what she would like to drink and without skipping a beat Bella said perfectly clear, "Diet Coke." John and I started laughing so hard. Bella doesn't drink diet coke. She had a lemonade instead. It was pretty funny.

During Thanksgiving, I didn't have time to sit down and blog about all I am thankful for this year. So, I thought I would do it now at the end of the year. We had an incredible 2008 and here is something from each month of last year that I am thankful for:

January: MY LIFE- This is my birthday month, a nice way to start out the year. I am so thankful for a blessed life. I have my health, my mind (most of the time), a wonderful family, and a purposeful existence. A great life.

February: SHOES- I went to my first shoe show this month. I went with Brennan and my mom. Not only did we have a blast, but it really helped develop Cents of Style as a legitimate company. I feel so blessed to have this company and the fulfillment it brings into my life.

March: AMBITION- I had a hard time thinking of something for March, but I knew that John traveled that month, so I am grateful for him, his job and his ambition. He works very hard and has to be away from us often. I know he doesn't love to travel for business, but I know that he does whatever he has to to provide for us. For that, I am grateful.

April: SISTERS- Every spring my sisters, sister-in-laws, mom and I go on a girls-only trip. We laugh, shop, eat and then we shop some more. I look forward to it every year, because I get to be with some of my favorite people in the world.

May: TRAVEL- In May, we traveled to Grand Cayman with John's brother, Joe, and his family. We had a fabulous time. We relaxed in the sun and played in the gorgeous Caribbean water. I don't ever want to forget the chickens, the peanut butter sandwiches or the sting rays.

June: MIRACLES- Heavenly Father blessed us with our son, Chase, this past June. We prayed, hoped and wished for him. He has filled my face with smiles and heart with joy everyday since.

July: FAMILY- We spent the 4th with John's family. We went camping at Deer Creek. Kids got dirty and then cleaned off by jumping into the water. They loved to tube off the back of papa's boat. There is always great food and laughs when the Browns get together.

August: BELLA- She turned 3 this month. She has grown up so much in 2008. She has gone from being a baby to truly a "big girl." She makes us laugh (and scream) everyday. Another miracle that fills our life.

September: EDUCATION- Bella began preschool and private speech therapy this fall. It has helped her very much. I think back to a year ago when all she said was "yeah, mama and dada." Now she won't stop chattering, definitely something to be thankful for.

October: FRIENDS- Since moving into our home, we have made some excellent friends. People we know we can rely on no matter the circumstances. What a blessing to have such good people in our life.

November: HISTORY- The American people elected Barack Obama to the Presidency of the United States this month. No matter your political beliefs, this was a momentous day. I teared up multiple times that day, knowing that when I tell my son he can be anything, it is the truth.

December: CHRIST- At this time of year we celebrate the birth of the Lord. I feel so blessed to know Him and the power of His atonement in my life. He makes all my other blessings possible.

Tonight after dinner we made a gingerbread house. It was so fun. Bella loved it. She was very particular about putting specific colors together and in specific areas of the house. Chase wanted to eat it. And every time Bella got icing on her finger, she did eat it. I think it is another tradition we need to add to the list.

PS- Don't be alarmed that Bella doesn't have pants on...we can't keep clothes on her anymore. We told her she had to get dressed to make the house and the shirt was the result. Better than nothing, I guess.

A New Christmas Tradition

I got a this great idea from my sister, Erin. We have been collecting Christmas books for several years now. This year I finally have enough to do the 12 days of Christmas with books. We started on the 12th, I wrapped all the books and every night before bed, Bella chooses one and we read it. It is helping us get in the Christmas spirit and a great tradition to continue in the years to come.

Ward Christmas Party

Saturday was our ward Christmas party. They had a nice breakfast and then SANTA came. Bella was so excited. When it was finally her turn to sit on his lap she ran up to him and started jumping up and down. When Santa asked her what she wanted for Christmas she promptly replied a "kee-cheen" A Kitchen. We will have to see if he listened....

I thought this picture was so funny. This is the boys pretending they were sad they didn't get an individual Christmas present, like the girls did. John can't even act "sad" for a second. Shortly after this Karen went and bought all the boys nerf guns.

We were with the whole Brown family for Thanksgiving this year. Karen and Cecil rented a cabin up at Sundance. We had such a great time. It was filled with food, family, laughs, food, games and some more food. I definitely gained some pounds. Above are some of my favorite pictures from the weekend. Sweet Potatoes and Rice

Chase got to eat solid food for the first time on Thanksgiving. He turned 5 months the day before, so we thought it was fitting to wait and let him have sweet potatoes and rice cereal on the most gluttonous day of the year. He loved it! Bella was not this into food. He would start crying if I did not get it into his mouth quick enough. He was even grabbing the spoon. Then, later on in the evening we were having pie and he was smacking his lips and trying to grab mine. Maybe this will finally add some chubs to his tininess.

Brown Family Pictures

We ventured out the day after Thanksgiving. We walked on trails for a bit and took some family pictures. It was cold and beautiful. Some liked it more than others. Jake's family were troupers, walking further than anyone else, while Carter ended up warm in the car much sooner than anyone else, but in his defense, he was very sick the next day, so I am sure he did not feel very well.

Service Project

While up at the cabin over Thanksgiving, my mother-in-law organized a service project for us to do. We made lap quilts for a nursing home where our Grandma Brown lived, until she passed earlier this year. The kids drew in the squares, hands, feet, dogs, whatever they felt like. Then we tied and binded them. It was a great experience. It was fun to all work together towards something that will bring happiness to those in need.
